More than Just Faces - The Division and Destiny on Cosmetics

This is not a rant about the cosmetics we received. I think having alternate heads and faces is good, it makes things look a little more interesting, and I trust more and better cosmetics are coming.

This is just my wish regarding future cosmetics for troopers.

First with regard to The Division. I really liked how you could customize the look of your character on many different layers: the jacket, the hat/helmet, the glasses, the shirt, the pants, vests, boots and shoes. Even scarves and other small things. I am not suggesting that we be able to customize shoes and glasses, but at least provide a few different versions of uniforms for the classes, especially on the Rebellion and Resistance because they didn't have the budget for uniformity like the Empire and the First Order. They went out there with what they had, so it would be really nice if we could customize our Resistance fighter down to the helmet or jacket or other significant items to really get the look we wanted. I don't think it has to be as extensive as the Division, but at least have a similar vibe.

Then with regard to Destiny, each class had different types of armor with different looks and you could customize the colors, but you could always recognize a Warlock, Hunter or Titan no matter what type they had on. There was a significant difference. So while in The Division every player was similar and had all the same options for cosmetics, there could easily be a particular style for each class.

Also, how about map-specific customizations? This goes right along with hero skins, where I want Hoth Han Solo on Hoth, but I don't want Hoth Han Solo on Tatooine. Let's have the skins we own be set to appear when we play on maps that are appropriate for that skin! Then take that further and have particular uniform choices for the troopers depending on the map you play. So on Starkiller we have winter-appropriate uniforms and Tatooine is much lighter and looser-fitting.

This would be something that could give Battlefront 2 enormous depth, but it might also be more trouble than they want to go to, since it's not an Open World RPG-style game, and they want to focus on bigger things like Maps and Modes and Heroes and Reinforcments.

Your whole post is good but I want to point this out in particular. You are spot on. If someone spends 40,000 credits on the Han Endor Skin but also has the Hoth Han Solo Skin from work that was put in to get it from a challenge, we should be able to use them both. How cool would that be to have different Hero Skins set to their proper planet!? And we would also get more uses out of more skins. It would also feel much more mixed and have a nice fesh variety in game. Another example is Rey. When you play as her on Jakku she would have her scavenger outfit like she did in the movie, but when she is on Crait she would have her Jedi Training outfit. Then let's say you have Rey's Ahch-To Skin. When you play as her on maps like Naboo or Endor she would then use that one. But I think their should be an option to have a toggle on/off for this as some people may want to use 1 Skin on all maps because they may like it more then the others. Also it wouldn't be good to force the players to have to do it.

I like playing whatever hero cosmetic on whichever map. (Hoth Luke on Tatooine, Endor Han on Hoth etc.)
  • Some valid points there. I think the first option is to be able to change your skin before the stage starts. I believe you could do that in BF1. It would be a simple patch fix to add the option along with being able to change your star cards.

You bring up a good point in changing looks from other games, to personalize it. I know in Madden you can "create your own player" and there at least 30 options for look, hair, skin tone, etc. With these trooper skins, there is not a variety of troopers as I had hoped for, and with the exception of the alien looks, they are just modified versions of basically the same character at a price. I think, with limits, the unique look with a personalized option would be very interesting. I've never complained about it, but it is odd that up until this point every class character by faction looked exactly the same.

Being a fan of Resident Evil games, I am used to being able to earn, and occasionally pay for, the option to change the costume of the characters. It can make the game more fun, even humorous. So the possibilities of changing skins is only limited by the imagination. And of course there are more Hero looks that could be made available as well. I still want Bespin Luke... Anyway, that's my two cents.

  • The possibilities of changing skins is also limited by Lucasfilm. They will only allow certain things as long as it doesn't somehow conflict or "not fit" within the Star Wars universe. Bespin Luke should be a shoe-in. Too many people are asking for him.

Awesome ideas! If they put this customization system in, I would definitely blow all my credits making my soldiers look just right before sending them off into battle.
  • Give us the option to spend skill points and change appearance when we are waiting in between matches on an active playlist.

Having to quit the playlist to do this right now sucks.

You and me both, man. But I suppose that considering regular troops are mostly expendable, and are not designed to be a playable character over a long period of time (like in Destiny or The Division), then appearance really takes a back seat.

I know @F8RGE said that the option to spend skill points between matches is slated to arrive with Season 2. Not sure about the other things, but I definitely agree with all of that.

I would personally like a lot more detailed infantry customisation too, like you said. Stuff like adding/removing the Clone Heavy's little manbag, giving my Specialist a scarf, taking my Rebel Officer's hat off... Also, gender customisation please! Really they should just add all the human heads from 2015 into the game for the OT and ST factions, have their voice on the stormtroopers. That would be an easy way to get started and keep people like us who want to see differentiation between two Assaults happy. Then they could work on making the outfit better (obviously new gameplay content should be prioritised), like having different jackets, accessories etc. And then there could be some level-locked outfits like in the old game.

Every species and gender should be for every class (that makes sense, no aliens for the Empire or Female Clones...). I want my Twil'lek babe back for my Assault ; )
