Lightsaber combat

Currently lightsaber combat as it stands Is very casual and promotes either spamming attack, turtling or countering when struck whilst blocking. On paper it sounds viable but is too simple to become an effective, rewarding, skill based system. You have to get the jump on opponents dealing damage quickly and then if dealing with a competent player begin dancing round eachother trying to backstab because both people use block effectively. I think if the combat was just abit more complex such as a tightly timed parry system to knock back opponents to get damage in and the standard holding block only negating damage with no knock back, this could be a solution to the roll of the dice system we currently have. Much like darksouls or for honour, both games that have done MELEE combat well. I would like to know what you'se think on this and a possible alternative.
