The Road Ahead, Part 5 — September/November 2019
DICE is very aware that the community loves and wants more Prequel/Clone Wars content, and there's still more Clone Wars content to come. However, the DICE team is also very aware that —although heavily requested—the Prequels are not the only Era in Star Wars...and players want variety. In Battlefront, as in the force, there must be Balance.
After almost a full years' worth of clone Wars content (going back to the release of General Grevious in October 2018), the content focus will shift back to the Original Trilogy with the (re)introduction of...
The Scarif DLC in BF2015 captured the epic feeling of the Battle Of Scarif from the movie. I think that the best parts of the Walker Assault and Infiltration game modes should be combined for a Galactic Assault on Scarif.
Remastered and restructured, Scarif from Rogue One would be a PERFECT GA map, utilizing remastered versions of the Scarif Beach, Scarif Jungle, and Landing Pad 13 from BF2015.
The ultimate goal for the Rebellion is to transit the Death Star's stolen data tapes offworld and into the hands of the Alliance.
Similar to how GA on Naboo works, the first phase will feature an AT-ACT Walker plodding towards the Rebels, as the Alliance attempts to simultaneously weaken and disable the Walker with Ion Disruptors, and call in air support from Blue Squadron to take the Walker out (a la Walker Assault 2015). Doing so makes stages 2 & 3 a bit easier for the Rebels. Failure means dealing with the AT-ACT while trying to fulfill the rest of your mission.
Stage 2 would involve the Rebels arming and trying to destroy one of two Imperial cargo shuttles by placing explosive charges on them. The Imperials attempt to deactivate them before they detonate.
Once the Rebels have called in Blue Squadron Support to take down the walker, and they've armed and destroyed the cargo ships, Stage 3 involves securing the area then pulling the master switch to transmit the stolen plans to the Alliance (like securing the communication consoles on Geonosis).
The Third Stage of Infiltration from BF 2015 on Scarif is perfect for a Strike-type mode, and narratively speaking, continues the story each of Galactic Assault. Actually all of the main modes are intertwined story-wise, you just have to look closely. Strike will be the scenario that gets the rebels the plans BEFORE Galactic Assault. The Rebels have to escort one of three data tapes to their U-Wing to evacuate.
BATTLE OF SCARIF/SHIELD GATE
In the entirety of the Star Wars film Saga, the Battle of Scarif was the BEST space battle. Yes, including the final battle in ROTJ. The Star Destroyer dock already exists in-game in the Fondor map (which is my favorite SA map) and it would be an incredible (and essential) addition to Starfighter Assault. Once again, we can look to the first phase of Infiltration with the Rebel attack on the shield gate for inspiration. There are two Imperial-class Star Destroyers that the Rebels must take down, then escort their U-Wings to the shield gate to begin the (Galactic) Assault.
If ever the was a DLC to remaster, once again, Scarif is the one. Almost everything in it deserves to be brought into BF2, and the heroes are no exception.
I'll include this because there's a possibility of it coming to fruition, but I don't think it will. Some will point to the Disney TV series about Cassian that has been announced, but that show is way down the line. Not until some point later in 2020. Nevertheless, Cassian would be a good hero, with some cool appearance options, so in case it comes to pass...
CASSIAN AND K2 in a U-Wing
if we don't see Cassian as a proper hero, I'd like to see him and K2 as a Starfighter duo (like Lando/L3, Han/Chewie, Rey/Chewie). It would be one of the most entertaining duos in the game. Well, the chances of it being entertaining are high... Very high.
TROOPER SKINS AND REINFORCEMENTS
Rebel Troops will likely get a new default skin for Scarif as they do on every map
Shoretroopers would be the Empire default skin, we could see some customization options here for the Squad Leader and Captain (Assault and Officer):
Since in my timeline for content drops, Reinforcements have already beed added, I think there's a good chance that we might see two new map-specific reinforcements:
Imperial Security Droids
Rebel Pilots (Blue Squadron)
Once Rebel pilots are a reinforcement it would be a RogueOne-esque addition to include blue squadron appearances for the rebel pilot reinforcement.
Lastly, a few months after the release of the Large Scale Game Mode (Conquest) for Arcade, we'll finally see the addition of...
STARFIGHTER ASSAULT ARCADE
Ben has touched on this so we know that it's coming at some point, but "Soon" is never soon enough. SA is quite possibly the most perfect mode in BF2. Immersive. Fun. Strategic. Tactical...and would need little, if any, tweaking. Solo Players have been waiting for this for a long time and after the the additions of a few new Prequel/Clone Wars/Rogue One Starfighter maps, the time is right.
December 2019 will be a big month for Battlefront with Episode IX releasing...
