CGI vs Practical effects in the Prequals

https://www.quora.com/Is-it-true-that-The-Phantom-Menace-used-more-practical-effects-than-all-the-other-Star-Wars-films

An interesting read if true, shows a ton of practical sets I thought were cgi.

  • It's not the CGI that ruined the prequels. It's the terrible storytelling and the overall aesthetic. It just doesn't "look" like SW. With that said TPM had some impressive practical effects.

Looking back TPM may be the best looking of the prequals. I loved the prequels but the gosh awful dialogue is criminal. People blame good actors for a awful lines, it actually had to be hard to act and sound that bad. GL must have been going through a midlife crisis at the time lol.

You could be right about the look of the movie. Anyway they are what they are. Btw I highly recommend the "Making of TPM" documentary. It was on the DVD bonus disc. It could be on youtube. Man is that interesting to watch. It's like watching a disaster in slow motion. At the same time it gave me huge respect for the people involved. Some real effort was there.

Pretty much. Though it’s become a meme at this point.

Dialogue was odd, putting it politely. I'm sure I'm in the minority that the political theme was a great story Idea, it's an allegory of British Colonialism. I would've preferred TPM start with Anakin as a teen, that way AOTC and ROTS could've focused on Anakins descent to the darkside, instead of rushing it.

The visual effects hold up much better than the other two, primarily because it was shot on film vs digital. Also, the space battles in TPM used models, not sure it wathat way in the other two. ROTS intro has aged horribly, looks like a video game.

    Wrong

The thing that ruined them was they were actually made in the first place

It was man, no doubt. I remember watching Samuel L. on the set of Jumper talking about the bad rap Haden and several other actors got, all due to the bad dialogue basically. Acting is fine for the most part but my gosh, having to read some of those lines, I may need a few shots of the hard stuff.

I’m a big prequel guy so I loved them, although I think he could have easily made 5 films. The Clone Wars alone could have been its own trilogy.
