106 GB ????

Why is this game so huge in filesize and so little in content?
Please explain.

Replies

  • I definitely wouldn't say little in content. However some of the patch sizes have been really big. Like 5GB, and the additions were only one reinforcement and some changes.

I had the same situation last month. Has to be something the devs are doing or not doing regarding file size.

Pretty sure when they made the game load faster it increased in gigs. Should only be around 60 gigs at this point

Doesnt explain why a 5gb patch requires over 60 gb of space.
  • Little in content? It's probably one of the more content filled games out on the market right now.

    Right.
It says 50GB on the box for the PS4 version.
Which means, the required space for all the base game content (18 planets, all Starfighter Assault content, all units, weapons, heroes, vehicles and the campaign) should be about 50GB.

Looking at post-launch content additions in terms of assets, we got Crait, Kessel, Geonosis, Felucia.
    The campaign extension.
Ported maps Bespin, Jabba's and Survivors of Endor.
New tank, a handful new units and a handful new heroes....
Which ... yes... it's not nothing.
    But it's not worth 50GB.

Battlefront 15 including all Season Pass content took about 40GB on the PS4.

Aside from actual gameplay content, we got an absolute disproportionate amount of Clone and hero cosmetics.

I think the filestructure should be somehow reorganized to allow installation of separate modules.
There should be a way to separately uninstall the campaign, for example.
Then I would like the option to disable cosmetics and uninstall all the different Clone legion assets and additional hero skins, so that in my game only the default player models for a specific map are referenced.
Whoever enables cosmetics can play with cosmetics enabled on his own screen.

All maps must be available in all modes.
Strike players like myself downloaded all these extra 56GB of fine content, too, but haven't seen any content additions for Strike.

Lastly, there has to be a hero-free large mode, where it is possible to play the game like a traditional multiplayer-shooter.
Hero play would be its own module and if we're not interested we should be able to uninstall the hero module and with it all hero models and hero-gamemodes.

Game updates should only shovel content on my harddrive according to the modules, I have installed.

106 GB is just too much.
  • 4k textures mate, models with high verticy count, many models and model variations, big scenes ... you can count it 🤷🏼‍♂️

Download was quick but installation took around an hour on standard PS4.

Seems like during installation of the update, huge chunks are copied and stored as transitional duplicates before the original is deleted....

@holstar1993 The reason you had that problem is not the Dev's but a Sony problem. When you download updates on ps4 it starts copying after the initial update downloads before it finishes installing. What it is doing when it copies is it is re-downloading a majority of the actual game size to compensate for data corruption. So if you have 40 gigs free and the update is only 5 gigs, but the copying needs 70 then you will have to meet that 70 gigs of free space requirement. That is something Sony added in later in the life for the ps4 and does it for all games.

  • The game is about 50 GB Content and 50 GB overwritten bug-filled "patches"

Why does RDR2 updates not have the same problem?

It does. The recent update back in September actually had the same problem. Like I said it just varies each update on copying size and speed. The lower the copying size the faster the copying speed and vice-versa.

I'm no expert, but the first time it happened to me was the September BF2 patch. I'll take your word for it, sounds like you know something about it. Thanks for the info.

I think the console needs twice the the space to install it. It’s stupid. If it’s 50g you need close to 100g free. The “copying” part in the installation is to blame imo.

  • Plenty of content in the game but yeah I agree the amount of storage it takes up is just annoying
  • Ok before this thread turns into a firestorm, let me explain this. The game's graphics when applied to its content is whats making it huge. The Original Battlefront II had 100% more content then this game(if you don't agree, you have not played the original battlefront II), and yet it was only 6.4GB. Why you ask?

Now, that was before we had so many new systems and features. Battlefront II has so many advanced SFX and sounds and AI and all its other garbage. Its mainly the graphics though I believe. The maps are big, of course, but not bigger than Battlefront II(2005). Battlefront II 2005 had 10 times the map and they were MASSIVE, but they were simple. They didn't have detail in every rock, they didn't have miniature battles of AI fighting each other in the distance, not the weather, advanced backgrounds, etc. EA is very concerned with giving us a very in-depth, expensive(hehe), and realistic experience over raw content.

So the file size is more than likely going to increase over time, by way more. Im sure they COULD make it a way smaller file size then it is, but they don't see a need too.
