Bf2, the biggest comeback in gaming history?

Prev1
I've seen this being said multiple times on different sites from different people and I've always wondered where it came from. YouTube?, Reddit?, Twitter? Imo I don't really agree on this but what do you guys think? Comeback or not?

Replies

  • Yes. I remember Launch was god awful. Lootboxes everyone. No PT content. No mode with Command Post. No cool reinforcements. No skins

Imo they gotta add trooper weapons, SA maps/ vehicles, bug fixes, and more balance and other stuff for me to consider it a comeback at the moment
  • Nah that’s no mans sky
  • Siege or No Man’s Sky would hold that title.

This game has done alright, though.
    Confidence born of ignorance

Ah forgot about No Mans Sky. That game was so hyped and it fell so hard.

Personally not a fan of Siege compared to the other RS games but yeah it did make a good comeback.
  • Okay maybe I over exaggerated 😂

When a game launches with extremely controversial content aka lootboxes, and locked Star Wars icons, which leads to the most upvoted Reddit post in Reddit history, thus leading to the government getting involved to remove these lootboxes, not to mention how far the game has come with tons of new content long since then that brought many players back to the game including myself, with yet more content to come, and even IGN re-reviewing the game...yes I would say that's probably the biggest comeback in gaming history.
  • Siege or No Man’s Sky would hold that title.

Ah forgot about No Mans Sky. That game was so hyped and it fell so hard.

It’s apparently really good now. For such a small team, they did well. The problem was that they had no real spokesman, and the promises just kept getting higher.
You guys are gonna make me rich......

    That Specialist rework was disappointing.

  • It’s definitely made a huge comeback. No debating that.

Well, I wouldn't know about "in game history".

But inspite of all the bugs, the imbalance and some stupid decisions made by DICE. It's undeniable that the game has indeed improved a lot and that the surge of new players and all these comments is warranted. Getting rid of the lootboxes aside, they have given us a very good amount of content. 3 New maps, 6 new heroes (counting the 8balls), 8 new reinforcement, Capital Supremacy, Co-Op, IA, these last two with Hero AI, and another armor vehicle for the Republic. A lot of trooper skins, some hero skins (definitely not enough).
The game launched in end-2017 and had a rocky launch to say the least. It's 2020 and there's still no hint that content will stop coming. So credit where credit is due. Yes, they fell and are falling behind on many important things such as new blasters (new blasters coming with Reinforcements excuse was lame), GA maps, SFA maps, new (or reworked) star cards and so on. But the game got a lot better in the past year and some appreciation needs to be showed at least. Doesn't mean everything's good, there's a lot to work on. But playing the game is worth it.

  • Not at all, the gameplay is still trash and always will be. I miss bf1 so much

Well, to be honest, I don't think so. Generally speaking, I find that no matter how good a game may be, the more I play it, the more burnt out I get of it. I believe my time away from Battlefront 2 has certainly helped therefore, but I also believe facts are facts...the current state of the game vs launch speaks for itself.
  • I don't know about gaming history, but it's certainly been a huge comeback. I think Rainbow Six Siege probably had a bigger one, but Battlefront 2 imo would be the #2 comeback in this current console generation behind Siege.

As mentioned, IGN just re-reviewed the game a month ago. At launch, IGN gave Battlefront 2 a 6.5 mostly due to the loot boxes. With their re-review, IGN bumped the game up to an 8.8. Content creators on YouTube and Twitch have been playing the game again, including some of the big ones like JackFrags, Lirik, and xQcOW.

The player numbers are up to or exceed launch levels.

I've been playing on and off since launch. Since the Felucia update, I've had Battlefront 2 in my regular play list now. Sony at the end of the year does a cool thing where they tell you your play stats for the year. Battlefront 2 was my 2nd most played game in 2019, which was not the case at all in 2018. I expect it will take over as my most played game in 2020.
  • I also think Battlefront 2 has benefited from Jedi Fallen Order, and the trailer for the Celebration Edition was amazing. I think gamers are figuring out that a turnaround may be happening at EA, and yes there is good Star Wars gaming there.
  • Definitely the greatest comeback I've ever seen. Close to launch, the game was panned by almost every major source out there. Today, the game is almost universally praised now.

Do you think these reactions were overreactions. People mostly following. Maybe at launch with a lot of hate and maybe now with a lot of praise? Or do you think it's all deserved

I for one think it's deserved. They begun to turn heads with the Geonosis trailer and Obi-Wan. JackFrags is mostly known for his Battlefield videos, but started doing Battlefront videoes with Capital Supremacy. He did another with the Clone Commandos, and another one recently after Rise of Skywalker update. CS and Co-op have been huge reasons people have returned because that's the kind of gameplay people expect from Battlefront.
  • Clearly not we are going from letdowns to letdowns, not even pr wise it's the greatest comeback which is battlefront 2 strongest point, No Man's Sky takes the crown.
It's just a Youtube clickbait catchphrase that got used by the majority as a result.

Yeah I forgot about No Man's Sky. Destiny also did a major turnaround with their DLC, as did Division. I think Siege is the top though considering it caught on in E-sports as well. Battlefront 2 is certainly one of the biggest.
  • Definitely not the biggest comeback. It’s got exactly the amount of drip-fed content you would expect and the bugs glitches balancing and communication have been comical. It can be fun but people really over exaggerate the progress that has been made.

The game sucked so hard and now it's maybe an average to OK?

The game has gone on repeated huge Mega discounts enabling the sales and numbers to go up for the holidays mostly?

We never have and never will see an actual player count. I'd love to see that graph. Just before the Holidays PC had just about died, xbox was complaining for servers hugely, and playstation was hurting in multiple modes.

The sounds a whole lot like polishing a ***** and saying its shiny

    - Hero balance is comical
    - SA no love, and never will
    - strike never ever any love or adjustments
    - day 1 bugs still exist
    - SA and Extraction - biggest threads. No love
    - CS bland and balance issues, 2 hr matches
    - server browser (or at least an era selector or something, geez can I never see Kashyyyk again?)
    - private servers
    - hatred of blaster heros
    - no trooper content. Zero. Zilch
    - broken milestones and such
    - pathetic weapons. They were better at launch
    - still no Ashoka! Lolololol.
    - never any real roadmap
    - monster patches that ALWAYS break something
    - BSOD...like on repeat
    - children of Reddit
    - 300 rainbow skins, but really no others comparatively
    - promised a "dark side" story. It was...what was that mess? And it had levels not even used!
    -

Dont call it a comeback, I've been here for years.

    -

Most of these things the general Battlefront fan doesn't care about, which is why the population tanked so hard after launch.

I've been here for years too. I've also spent hundreds of hours on the original Battlefront games that most hold as the standard for the series. DICE Battlefront hasn't even come close to that standard until the past 9 months. CS, Co-op, Instant Action, the reinforcements, the new heroes...it's all come together to finally create a combined arms experience that most Battlefront fans are after. The game has been on sale for ever, but only just in the past year started to recover it's player base.
  • I would say Warframe and Destiny 1 were the biggest comebacks, way more so than this game. Maybe this was shaping up to be this the biggest comeback, but they fumbled the ball right on the goal line.
  • Empire_TW wrote: »
No there was no comeback, the game gets worse with every patch. Outside of the people who associate themselves with this game on any of those platforms you mentioned I never hear about this game anywhere else.

This, even though the game is better than what it was at launch Battlefront 2 is still objectively not a good game. It’s pretty dumb how people praise a game that still clearly isn’t finished.

I wouldn't even say it's better than it was then, except for a few balance tweaks like default health on kill for heroes and officer battlepoint gain the game overall plays worse than at launch.

4 new heroes (soon to be 6), around 12 new maps, 8 new reinforcements, many incredible skins, majority of bugs fixed, revamped modes, many great new modes, etc. The positives outweigh the negatives.

Okay then I guess I can say your opinion is objectively wrong.

Bad weapon balance, bad class balance, bad hero balance, bad reinforcement balance, terrible and highly linear map design on every map, terrible matchmaking, terrible saber hit detection, and a numerous amount of bug and glitches after 2 years from a studio that used to be known to make great games. But according to you all of that makes this game good. Maybe try playing the game first before you post comments.
I'm under the belief this game actually has one of the best weapon/class balances on the shooter market right now.
Hero balance isn't perfect but far better than in any point in the game's lifespan.
Some reinforcements like the Droideka and Gunner needs tweaks, but most of them seem to me overall balanced.
Look no further than Capital Supremacy for non-linear map design
Most of the bugs have been fixed, some still do exist yes, but the amount of bugs are in a much more healthy position at the moment
Matchmaking has almost never been a problem for me, if it's a problem for you, it's most likely a problem happening on your end
    Half-agree on saber hit detection
The issues you listed don't make the game good. The great parts of the game you didn't bother listing make the game shine.

I haven't played every game, but they've definitely turned things around in a big way. The game is in great shape, the player base is way up, there is a huge amount of content added for free, and the perception of it has changed from very toxic to genuinely positive. I've always been a lot higher on this game then most, but I was worried that the toxic reaction would stop Dice/EA/Disney from approving/making more Battlefront games going forward, and I thought the hate was really unfair to developers. I'm so glad this has changed, and now the franchise once again has a bright future ahead.

  • Thing is people aren't all that serious about Battlefront, not in a competitive way. Not long time fans anyway. To them it's Battlefield in Star Wars. Battlefield has always had nagging bugs and issues, but it did combined arms gameplay better than anyone. So fans put up with the bugs. Same with Battlefront. The old games were far from perfect, most notably had issues with team killers and rocket spammers. But the overall gameplay kept people coming back.

Capital Supremacy is now doing that for DICE Battlefront 2. The mode is giving us open warfare in Star Wars again that we haven't seen since 2005. I'm not ready to put it on the level of a legit Conquest mode, but it's nailing the combined arms feel that Conquest fans are after.

Many have argued they stayed with the game due to it being the only most recent SW multiplayer game. If it wasn't SW they would've left
