Bring back Galactic Conquest for Battlefront 2017!

A lot of people on these forums have been asking for the return of Battlefront's other quintessential single-player mode- Instant Action- and I'm all for that, but I would also like to see the return of Galactic Conquest as it was in Pandemic's Battlefront II.

Obviously, it would be a single-player mode with AI bots. The mechanics of building fleets and earning credits by conquering planets would remain intact, but there should be more to conquering a planet that just capturing control points.

1. Operations, Conquering Planets, and Rewards.

To begin with, when you invade a planet, you are given up to five objectives to complete called "Operations"; these would be based on the different game modes added in Battlefront 2015 (Fighter Squadrons, Walker Assault, Extraction, Sabotage, Blast, Cargo, Drop Zone, Hero Hunt, etc.) each of which would carry special rewards in addition to credits upon victory.

For example, completing a game of Drop Zone might unlock new Star Cards for purchase. Achieving victory in Extraction would unlock new Blasters. Surviving a Hero Hunt would allow you to then recruit a single Hero to play as in all future Operations. Establish air superiority in Fighter Squadrons to unlock new Starfighters for space battles and all future Fighter Squadron Operations. Emerge victorious in Cargo to earn extra credits to purchase more unlocks. These are just a few examples.

This means there would be no character classes in Galactic Conquest of course; you would customize your character and select your weapons and Star Cards/Equipment just as you could in Battlefront 2015 or Renegade Squadron. All character customization options would be unlocked from the start, and purchasable using Credits earned from completing Operations.

Once you've succeeded in at least 3 different Operations on a planet, you go into a game of Supremacy to make the final push for victory, or you can try to complete more Operations to get more rewards. If you achieve victory in Supremacy, the planet is yours.

2. Space Battles.

As in Pandemic's Battlefront II, there would be Space Battles; if an enemy fleet is positioned above a planet or in your path on the Galaxy Map, you must either choose to engage or retreat just as before.

In Space Battles, you start out with one Fighter and one Bomber; the X-Wing and Y-Wing for the Rebels, and the TIE Fighter and TIE Bomber for the Empire. You can unlock more starfighters and Hero Ships by completing (Fighter Squadrons) Operations.

Space Battles would work a little bit differently than before. Each fleet would have one flagship with four escort ships in the form of Rebel Blockade Runners and Imperial Light Cruisers. You must destroy all the opposing faction's escort ships before you can target the flagship's subsystems or land in the hangar. More escorts would hyperspace in after one minute.

Taking out the subsystems from the outside of the enemy flagship would be a simple as shooting them until they blow up. If you decide to take down a ship from the inside however, you must plant charges on their critical systems and then defend them until they go off, much like in a game of Sabotage.

3. Invasion, Achieving Victory, and New Game+.

Once you've conquered every one of the opposing faction's planets, you must then attack their home base. For the Empire, this would be Coruscant and the Death Star... for the Rebel Alliance, this would be Yavin IV and Hoth.

Before you can launch Operations on one of these planets, you must first achieve victory in a space-to-ground game mode called Invasion. The invading faction must land on the planet's surface and capture all the control points to secure a foothold, while the defending faction must do all they can to destroy the enemy flagship in orbit; basically a hybrid of Supremacy and Space Battle.

If an enemy has a fleet in position above their home planet, you must first defeat them in a Space Battle before launching an Invasion. Once a foothold has been established you can then launch Operations to cripple the enemy, before establish Supremacy to complete the conquest of the enemy's home world.

Once you've either achieved Victory or have been Defeated in a game of Galactic Conquest, you would then have the option of starting a New Game+ where the galaxy map is reset, but you retain all of your unlocks from the previous game... but the opposing faction also has more Fleets defending their planets and more resources in the form of weapons, equipment, and starfighters at their disposal from the start.

* * *

While Instant Action is undeniably essential to the replay value to Star Wars: Battlefront 2017, I believe that having this kind of dynamic galaxy-spanning, objective-driven single-player mode would up the replay value even more... it would definitely go much farther than a simple linear campaign mode.

If you like the idea, let me know what you think, and share your thoughts and opinions on how it could be even better.

Bear in mind that I used things like Star Cards only as EXAMPLES, and I'm not advocating the return of Star Cards in Battlefront 2017 (I would prefer they returned loadouts and equipment to the way they were in Renegade Squadron/Elite Squadron).

Arcade mode needs 20v20 and starfighter battles for Battlefront II!!!

  • I love Galactic Conquest and Conquest. Both are the core modes of the Battlefront series.
Moreover I see Galactic Conquest as a perfect offline mode for split screen gameplay with friends.
There is absolutley no apology from DICE that they didn't brought both modes to Battlefront (2015). It has to be in Battlefront 2 (2017)!

I never really played Galactic Conquest, but I'd have no problem seeing it return.

Yes please. Even if you have to restructure it to make it work in a multiplayer-centric game, give us the feeling that we're part of a bigger conflict than a 20-minute match map rotation.

No. Restructuring Galactic Conquest to work in multiplayer kind of defeats the purpose of bringing back a single-player mode.

Battlefront was never a multiplayer-centric game. That's the big mistake that DICE made with Battlefront 2015, cutting out the two single-player modes that formed the core of the original games; Instant Action and Galactic Conquest.

I understand that, as I myself play the old games almost exclusively for singleplayer (GameRanger has servers for BF2). However, I think we need to get ourselves into the mindset that DICE just isn't going to give us the depth of singleplayer many of us are looking for.

If we can help them build some cool and unique multiplayer modes based on what make the old games awesome, that are fun to play, everybody wins to an extent.

Yes, I would love the real-deal GC to make a comeback, it's my favorite mode. No, I honestly don't believe it will happen.

MP over console was just getting started when BF2 released.

To even get online on PS you needed an overpriced adapter.

You're too pessimistic. DICE isn't the only studio work on the game; they have EA Motive and Criterion Games working together on the single-player. So if they have one studio committed to the multiplayer and two to the single-player... classic single-player modes like Galactic Conquest and Instant Action are more than likely IMO, especially considering the severe backlash from Battlefront 2015 over it's lack of single-player content. Instant Action is practically guaranteed the way I see it. Not too big of a leap from that to make Galactic Conquest.

While I want to agree, they decided that Nien and Greedo were the first heroes that should be released in a DLC.

I have a hard time trusting EA to do right by us after that, with anything.

That was then. This is now. By now EA has to have realized that how well Battlefront 2017 sells depends on the amount of single-player content in the game at launch.

They will get a lot more pre-orders if they confirm a fully-developed Instant Action mode, and even more if they bring back a Galactic Conquest that is true to it's single-player roots.

  • With the ponzi pricing scheme, the shoddy workmanship and games designed to hustle little kids.

Even if it has Galactic Conquest, Conquest or he// even if it has actual Star Wars in it, I've got other pressing concerns regarding EA's business practices.

With a company so concerned about being PC...yes that PC.

Why aren't they a little more transparent towards customers, why all the smoke and mirrors to earn a dollar?

Yeah, like I said, I'm all for that. Perhaps you should read more than just the title?

Having Instant Action back would be enough for me, truth be told (provided it's fully-developed and supports all game modes and maps, not like Skirmish)... but having Galactic Conquest return alongside it would make the single-player all the sweeter.

True, but I would say Instant Action > Galactic Conquest. I liked playing Galactic Conquest in Pandemic's Battlefront 2; it was almost like a mini-campaign, but I liked that in Instant Action I could just pick any map and play it whenever I wanted... also, Galactic Conquest in Battlefront 2 was missing a few of the cooler maps like Jabba's Palace and Tantive IV.

Instant Action is a absolute necessity. Galactic Conquest would be nice to have, but it isn't as essential.

To be honest if the 3 core modes (Conquest, Space Battles, Galactic Conquest), the offline single/multiplayer and the campaign are missing (even one) in the next game then they should search a new job for Dennis.
