Is specialist worth playing vs assault?

*I think I initially posted this in the wrong forums so putting it here*
I haven't been able to play yet so my question is: is the specialist worth it? It seems assault can do everything a specialist can and more, at least in paper.
Assault has 150 health vs specialist 100
They both have snipers, but assaults has more points if you add up each category (cooling, range, rate, damage) so it could be stronger (along with all its weapons). Assault has a grenade that kills vs specialists grenade that stuns. Vanguard makes assault very fast vs infiltration's invisible on radar, but vanguard doesn't overheat, is a one hit kill at both short and medium range, and has a wide shot that makes it very easy (at least during beta) to get the OHK. Infiltration has none of those things. Then while specialist you can see hidden people far away, you can't see them while wielding and aiming your weapon. Assaults works more like Scan pulse from the first battlefront where you can have your weapon drawn and aimed while you watch your enemy cone around the corner. The binoculars doesn't even mark anymore without an upgrade.
Am I missing something?
Specialist seems like it got hit way too hard with the nerf bat since beta.

It depends on the range you engage at.

  • It depends on the map, the section of the map, and the mode. I find I use specialist a lot more than assault, but I play mainly galactic assault. If my team isn't playing the objective, I will switch to assault.

  • when i see specialist and i am officer i go heeling him
just finished amazing game 35m half team officer and half specialist

All the classes are currently very phase , map , mode situational so half of me thinks okay that's how they should be but half says would have been more skill invloved if we had to choose at start then adapt to what is in front of you

You're going to have to grind to make it a respectable class. I've got friends on XB1 that have had the full game since the 9th (they've got connections apparently). They have already unlocked the highest tiered sniper for specialist. It's OHK on head shots for most classes, except heavy.

With that said, specialist is a fairly weak class, especially with first to weapons being as bad as they are.
  • My points are mainly vanguard looks stronger, assault has a sniper that looks better (has higher stats) than the specialists ones, and assault has 150hp plus can do close range well, and can see through walls with scan dart.

I get what you are saying tho, thx a lot for the input :-) . I'm hoping for a slight buff to specialist esp since everything from infiltration to the binoculars to their unique upgrade got nerfed from beta. The last 2 seemed unnecessary to me.
  • its all irrelevant specialist is nerfed, how you supposed to stealth around gathering intel for your team. when the enemy just autolocks onto your red nametag with any weapon they please.

I agree with everything you just said in the first part, plus the assault perk regens health for every kill. Specialist got nerfed in areas it shouldn't have frankly. I like what they did with infiltration, but I think the class is lacking in other areas.

I feel like with low health, specialists should be able to run faster. That would give them some viable defense.
  • I don't see the complaints. Learn to aim and you'll do great with specialist.

Yes, it's easier to play vanguard assault, but specialist is still pretty powerful.

It's not a learn to aim thing. You still have to fire at least two shots in with a weapon that has a terrible fire rate. Meanwhile, if I'm using my assault class with A280 I could miss a couple of shots and still get the kill before the specialist because the advantages in fire rate, power and overall health. Thats before you unlock the extended barrel, which increases the damage dealt at range.

In order to play with this class right now, you have to play super passive or super aggressive with infiltration and grind out kills until you get a competent primary weapon. That's not the case with any other class.

This is exactly what I found in the beta and why it needs 150 go. I would even get out sniped by everyone else. Plus if you plan to melee once in a while like in Blast, with 100 health you pretty much are required to take the extra melee damage boost (which is nerfed since beta) just so you have a chance of winning a punch fight.
  • It all depends on your skill level and how you play I find myself mainly playing specialist with the a280 sniper and outgunning most heavy and assault in CQC the trick is to get the jump on them and after 3/4 of your maximum fire rate do a roll and then finish them off with the last shot before your clip overheats just some pointers for you but best way to know is try it out for yourself all the best.
  • Yes, I have gotten top player many times with specialist
  • Some things I don't like about the specialist.
    1.) Squishy with 100 health.
2.) When you ads it lights you up like you're holding a flashlight and says, "please shoot me".
    3.) Grenade doesn't kill.
4.) I found I was a better sniper with assault.
  • "2.) When you ads it lights you up like you're holding a flashlight and says, "please shoot me".

Good ...so it should do for all snipers.
  • Im still griding my way to get a better weapon as a specialist.
But i would say that assault is better at the moment.
