The Machine Hunter! (Specialist subrole)

No, not monster hunter.

Is anyone else finding this specialist subrole incredibly fun and yet also quite helpful to the team?

My setup: A280CFE with burst fire and ion shot. Expert Weapons handling for sustained burst fire and trip mine for special situations. I know the NT242 hits harder but I'm no deadeye and it can't sustain damage as well as the A280.

LAATs are comically easy to down. Fighters and interceptors die in a couple of volleys and it's usually best to hit them when they're in the middle of their dive runs. But make sure your gun is already on unlimited cooling because you need those final bursts to finish it off when it flees. Other good times to fire at them is when they're in a middle of a turning contest with your flying buddy. Sometimes a few hits will cause them to panic and break off, leaving them ripe for the kill.

Bombers (especially light side ones) are more troublesome due to their high health and healing. I usually just tag them during their dive runs to scare them off, but I wont pursue. It's almost impossible to solo kill one at full health.

Ground speeders generally go down fast also. But I avoid engaging heavy armor since this setup doesn't appear to do enough damage compared to the NT.

For best results I recommend attacking in pairs, with the ally being a heavy, and both sufficiently spread out. I'll tag the aircraft during their dive and the heavy's ion torpedo would finish it off. You'll know you're making a difference for your team when the skies gradually become empty of enemy aircraft and your flying buddies start racking up the kills.

As for defence: obviously, never trade shots with a machine. I notice many players making the mistake of rolling to the side or back when they're being fired at by aircraft. It never works. What you should do is make sure you have ready cover in FRONT of you to roll into, such as a high wall, a cave or a house. Nothing funnier than diving into a hut and then hearing an aircraft that was angrily trying to gun you down crash into the roof. Tatooine is my favourite hunting map for this reason. Against Crait speeders, I try and make sure I'm never more than half a body up from a trench. When one starts charging at you, drop a trip mine and backroll. Half the time the speeder will run over the mine and get killed. But you'll probably also die from the explosion.

And if you do get killed, there's no shame in that. It's a guddayum machine!

Thanks for listening. I'd love hearing your stories/tips. Maybe I'll do a meaningless ramble about another specialist subrole next time - the tripmine troll.

The heavy shoots down the plane but the officer just watched from afar and collects BPs. Pathetic.

    Fantastic post!
  • I always thought about trying something like your setup instead of running running ion everything as a heavy to take out vehicles.

I was curious how affective it would be but this post has given me something new to try.
    Thanks ;)
  • Cheers!

I use NT exclusively to take out vehicles, it's amazing. I took out two AT-STs (solo) that were right next to each other, one after the other. I really wish I would have clipped it but since switching over to Xbox I haven't learned how yet. Probably my favorite memory of playing Specialist.

Aircraft are still a pain in my neck though (save the LAAT but that's more like a flying tank on rails). I don't think infantry has an effective way to deal with aircraft outside of flying another aircraft.

  • Specialist stinger pistol and repulsor cannon is also good against heros.

The specialist is good at “special” tasks.
  • Great Post, Do you play on Xbox? I run this kinda thing, but with NT and Repulsor for the side, but haven't exactly liked trip mine over personal.

  • This is the second post I've seen suggesting the A280cfe for star fighter killing. Going to give it a try tonight for myself. I already use the disruptor shot to take down ground vehicles the moment they spawn but have found it too hard to hit air vehicles consistently.

^^This. As much as I feel like the Specialist class is underpowered and broken, it's amazing how people always seem to think that they need to limit themselves to only 1 class for an entire match.

Good players recognize that you need to use the right tool for the job, and especially if they are focused on team objectives, they will switch between classes/characters as necessary.

Unfortunately, there are so many completionists out there that are ultra-focused on completing milestones that all they do is play the same class over and over for several entire matches at a time and don't realize that they would likely enjoy the game a lot more if they varied their experience more.

I agree and disagree. When I start a match with a specialist I like to play it all the way through because I find switching is jarring. I also like the challenge of find a role for the class to fill in all circumstances.

However when I play the other classes I often do switch it up because I feel the play styles between them are somewhat similar.
  • I LOVE being Specialist support on vehicle heavy phases. I make it my personal mission to take out what I've deemed the "Hovercraft Boyz" on Starkiller base. I hate those guys...
The speeders on Crait get special attention as well. I'm pretty good at leading a target and can snipe them quite effectively.
AT-STs on any map as well. Any way to level the playing field boys I'm all about it.

Hello and thanks! I play on the PC exclusively. But you wont hear any master-race type talk from me.

I really tried using the NT to hunt aircraft. That thing hits really hard, but my aim is quite mediocre. The A280 is a great AA spraygun IMO.
  • Ion shot for the A280CFE was my very last gun unlock. I'd already unlocked disruptor for the nt-242, which I assumed completely outclassed it, so only unlocked ion for the CFE for the sake of completion. I'd never even used it before reading this. But having played around with the CFE + ion last night, I think it's the most powerful anti-vehicle option in the game.

I played a round on Crait and the bullet/bolt velocity and damage make it easier to aim and a quicker time to kill compared to my previously favoured anti-vehicle Heavy build (FWMB+ion, ion turret, ion torpedo) I was frequently killing speeders in a single pass as long as I managed overheat and hit the gold reload. Hitting retreating speeders in the rear does huge damage if you land all your shots.

On Hoth and Kashyyyk, taking down starfighters was way easier than any other build I've tried, again because of bullet velocity + damage. The LAAT is laughably weak against it. Even against heavy armour I think the CFE is the best option. It just packs such a punch and is so easy to aim.

Great post, Jebus, thanks for taking the time to write it. You've opened my eyes to an anti-vehicle option I'd not even tried. Specialist is now my go-to class whenever I need to take down those pesky machines.

Yeah, it requires some massive leading but it’s doable. You can distrupt a lot of strafing runs.

Yeah, it is really good, but the NT is better depending on the vehicle. Against heavy armor NT is the best, but the A280 is great for taking down aircraft and Speeders are a middle ground, but it is pretty AV, but it doesn’t have a bunch of great cards sadly.

  • I spent the first round of Crait wrecking speeders with the A280-CFE last night. It was great fun and I ended up with tens of thousands of battle points. Then we switched sides and I got absolutely wrecked by enemies with the A280-CFE every time I spawned in a speeder and ended up with only 3k battlepoints after phase 1 :'(

Hey friend. If you're on light side I'd suggest hunting down those arrogant TIE fighters. Not many safe spots to do so unfortunately.

Best spot for me was at the long trenches joining the big cannons (with a small room beneath each one).

I'm a little worried now...if enough people start doing this DICE may start nerfing this setup or buff the machines even further. We don't need either.

Yeah, it will be worse than the NT. For helping your teammates kill plane abusers :'(

I'll try some Tie Fighter hunting when I'm on Crait next. I hope they don't the CFE+ion. It's the one anti-vehicle weapon that feels like it's in the right spot in terms of power and usability.
