Return of the Jedi or The Empire Strikes Back?

Which movie do you like more? I keep leaning towards one, then the other, and I just can’t decide.

    ESB.

RotJ starts off dull, starts to redeem itself until the Ewoks show up.

  • Empire Strikes Back, no competition. I love RotJ, but its predecessor has it all. Big battles, adventures, Luke’s training with Yoda, the story of Han and Leia... brilliant film.

This ruins this movie for me tbh
  • I'll always love Empire but RotJ probably has the best space battle.
Don't click unless you want to know the truth....
  • My favorite is RofJ because of epic space battle, and the introduction of the awesome TIE Interceptor! Also, I love the forest moon of Endor and it's environment.

I'm the same way. Throw A New Hope into the mix as well. They're all great in their own way. Really depends on my mood.
  • Jedi for the longest time but then Empire is just epic. Honestly its like the weather, always changing or like picking between your kids. Gotta say both for me.
  • I will also add that, while George Lucas has done a lot of stupid things with his movies, no film has been slaughtered the way RotJ was when he altered the ending. I remember back in like ’97, when the first batch of changes arrived together with re-releases in the theatres, I was mostly ok with what he had done. But that new song at the end of the final chapter... man... why?! And then, as if that wasn’t enough, he goes back in after the PT and alters one of the most powerful scenes in the entire saga. Vader’s ”Noooo” ruined that ending. And then young Anakin shows up as a force ghost and I’m just... baffled. Lots of cool improvements, but when the ending of RotJ comes up, I switch to Youtube.
  • The Empire Strikes back will always be the best for several reasons. It’s were character development really kicked of. It’s when Vader became one the best villains in cinematic history. Where we meet Yoda, and follow Luke on his path to become a Jedi, we learn what the Jedi are, what the force is. Han’s relationship with Leia, Harrison Ford’s “I know” ad-lib. And the music is epic. We got the Imperial March, Yoda’s theme. We got Luke’s first confrontation with Vader and the all-time quote “I am your father”. Movies don’t get much better than this.

Being that said Return of Jedi was also spectacular. We finally met Jabba (No, he wasn’t in A New Hope). And The Emperor!
Luke’s path to finding Vader’s redemption. And the final confrontation is epic. The music, EVERYTHING.

I have but one issue with it:

    1. The Ewoks were the first hint of the prequels that were to come.

I know your pain. That final “Noooo” is a real kick in the nuts. Luckily there’s something called: Star Wars Despecialized Edition. It’s the original trilogy reconstructed from various sources and the result is the 3 original theatrical cuts from the 3 movies. They are available in great quality. I recommend you look them up.
  • Gotta say Jedi. Luke murdering that entire sail barge. Green lightsaber. Glorious. Also bwings and incredible space battle. Love empire and the general consensus is that it's the best I understand but it will always be jedi
  • I prefer RotJ.

Yeah that additional "Noooo" was probably one of the worst changes to the OT

RotJ is great, but ESB has to be one of the greatest films of all time. Every time I watch it, I imagine what it would be like to be a SW fan just seeing it at the theater for the first time
  • Man, tough call!

    Pros:

ESB has AT-ATs (ROTJ has just the one on Endor, and it's not doing much, but it does turn its head, which is pretty cool, and worth rewinding the VHS to see again)
ROTJ has Luke as a Jedi with green lightsaber, my favorite hue of saber.
ESB has "Standby Ion Control. Fire."
ROTJ has the Emperor and all his wonderful lines of dialogue.
ESB has Boba Fett speaking and the rest of the (unnamed until the action figures came out) Bounty Hunters in what is easily one of the coolest "creature" scenes in all film.
ROTJ has Jabba's Palace and the awesome Leia Boushh costume.
ESB has "No, I am your Father."
ROTJ has "No, there is another..."

Cons? There are no Cons, lol.
"I'm Luke Skywalker. I'm here to rescue you!"
  • I prefer the Last Jedi over those two.

  • Both are great movies but I like Return of the Jedi a little more, except for the ewok's. Awesome scenes are the space battles and when Luke Skywalker meets Darth Sidious.
Failed to connect to EA Online.
  • "Tell your sister you were right..." Redemption. It is never to late.

ESB was a better made movie IMO and has an incredible script.

ROTJ is my favorite though because of Vader's sacrifice, Luke's faith in his father and his choice of certain death over serving the emperor.

I don't like ewoks, they're unsightly and rough and irritating and they got everywhere.

OK anakin, it must be rough living around those ewoks all the time and you must have been glad when you left endor to train as a jedi after beating sebulba in speeder bike racing

Empire Strikes Back is dull and boring. It pulls to sleep.
