Playing styles in different Ping sites?

This is weird, possibly logical, and more than likely coincidence, but....

Back when we had the triple XP weekend for heroes (or perhaps it was starfighters, I forget) I had a merry hell trying to find a match where I wasn't lagging and bouncing around (You know that lovely experience of walking down a clear corridor, to somehow then be facing a wall at least two solar days from where you were ;) ). As a last resort, I moved my ping from the Germany server to the US Virginia one (I am in London).

What I noticed was that the skill level of players I was up against dropped dramatically. As I have said many times on these boards, I am pretty weak as a footsolider or hero, but I was able to do some impressive levelling to my lower heroes and villains.

When the event ended, I changed back to Germany the next day of play (as the time zones guarantee more players online, in my own zone, naturally). Once again I was struggling to hold my own, my kills dropped and my deaths rose.

I've not being playing much since the SFA 3XP weekend for the reasons we typically complain about here (poor content, bugs etc) but this Sunday I decided to pop on BF2 and see if I could upgrade my OB1 and Dooku a bit more.

I was slaughtered in HVV and at one point playing as LS, we finished in about five minutes (if that!) and I had no kills, and small assists. I perservered and though the next was a longer match, the same players hammered us when we were DS. This went on for a few matches with players coming and going, and I recalled the somewhat easy kills on the US Virgina server, so I gave it a go. I immediately started placing between 1-5th in the table and upgraded Dooku and Ob1 a few levels.

Changed back to Germany, played SFA and had a tight match which we lost as the FO. Then another tight match we lost as Resistance. Now, I'm not used to defeat when I'm SF-ering and bearing in mind I'd just changed back from US server, I wondered....

So I went back to Virginia and played an SF map. It ended early, I had only 24 kills but I had been somewhat singlehandedly attending to the objective (uncharted territories) so 24 kills seemed okay (Plus I was in an A-wing Godmobile). I played a few more with similar successes (if early games can be caled 'successful')

Obviously European players are no better than Stateside ones, so I wonder why this should be. I swear-swear-swear I'm not imagining it. I mean it might be coincidence, but it really does seem to have a pattern.Do you think there are more/newer/younger players in US Virgina server areas just now or...?

Has any other player on the Germany server found this or something similar?

  • It's a good thing for Germany and the rest of Europe the Virginia servers had a great player base around the 1940's.

I live in the Eastern US and swap to the German server around 7am est when the Virginia server has a low amount of people on it. I have noticed (sort of what you are saying) that the matchmaking is better. Everyone has purple loadouts (Blast) and there aren't many new players in my matches. The matches are more intense. I will agree with that. I think it is the matchmaking. Oh, and it's XBOX.

  • Hmmm, interesting, especially seeing as we're on different platforms.

I also find I get much better connection with US Virginia. My German one is ~22ms whereas Virginia gets me ~102ms however my gameplay is far smoother, no lag or bouncing around. Odd that it should be so?

  • To be honest the German server is 102ms and I really don't see a drop off in hit detection etc., from the Virginia 18ms. I have 1GB fibre optic but I do see 3 bars in the upper corner of my screen where it never shows on the Virginia server. I have actually quit games to rejoin with the German server because of peak amounts of player volume.

  • Same as in BF15 gun firing style has an impact. Burst can often achieve better hit detection with microlag
  • This is all explainable by lag compensation Algorithm. It is extremely common for an out of region player to do extremely well versus in region players( gain versus loss in hit detection )....this game is very luck skewed rather than mostly skill based ;-)

Nooooooo! don't say that lol. I thought I was slaying by mine own skills. That makes the deaths I suffer in Virginia even keener.

There was an article on a site either HTLV or Cadred(not sure which one), years and years ago which compared the different play styles of European counter-strike teams, to the US teams. The US teams were much, much more aggressive in their playstyle, where as the Europeans were far more defensive.

Thanks. That’s really interesting. I wonder what percentage of Europeans think that way in contrast to north Americans.

  • Virgina server, Bespin. Everyone is outside and using the entire map to its fullest.

Oregon server, Bespin. Everyone is inside the galley hallways and the atrium underneath, indoors.

Play styles evolve. In a few months my post might not make sense.
    Find me in Blast, CO-OP, CS, usually playing Officer/Specialist/Aerial... u/n cosworth99. #nt242headshots #oldguy
Add me (xbox Oregon server) if you like
  • I play on Germany whenever I'm not with my merry two partners-in-slaughter. I don't know if anything particularly changes however, except that for the most part, I'm alone and cannot contribute nearly enough.

It's generally just me turning my brain off and doing / trying dumb things that'd never really otherwise work.

When I play on US, Virginia, it's a bit more /Going-For-It. My two compatriots have a tendency to reach heroes first, (or atleast before me) so my role quickly establishes as the supporter.

(An Iden with Stun Droid constantly recharged and a Palpatine with Chain Lightning available near-perpetually or a Bossk with rapid-gasgrenade capabilities is devastating.)

    Iron enigma treateth, Ultima
    Shielding light retreateth, Ultima
    Hydaelyn defeated. Ah, Ultima

The fact is that if you're running it's because you suck, and the game shouldn't pander to players who suck.

  • Japanese/East Asia players are better than everyone else.

US has lots of potato but also 1 or 2 really good players per lobby

Germany/Europe similar to US maybe a few more good players and a few less potato.

Brazil/South America are mostly potato but it's hard to say with all the lag I get.

Like 3 people playing in Australia so can't get a game started anyway

I play on aussie servers, and its all the same names everyday, pretty decent players, they seem to play a lot/ have no life or job. If i play on us servers I find a lot of potatoes, literally like you could just walk up to them and beat them to death, they seem very unobservant and don't look at their surroundings, of course there is one or two good players as you say, but overall not great. Never played Europe servers, pings getting out of control.

One things for sure, these world record kill streak videos you see on youtube with over 100 kills, I just laugh at the players, that would never happen down here on aussie servers. Most of the victims look like bots.
