Returned to Battlefront 1 and it was like visiting an old friend

I have been trying to enjoy Battlefront 2. I really have. The only game I played last year was Battlefront 1, and I absolutely loved it. I did finally lose interest after hundreds of hours due to the segregated season pass resulting in the maps getting a little stale. My anticipation for the second version was literally so strong I could taste it. Give me more Battlefront 1, just bigger...free dlc, new weapons, maps and characters...classes sounded great...was going to be so awesome!

For two weeks I have tried so hard to get virtually anything out of Battlefront 2. I am quite literally heartbroken by the game...which is of course very odd to say about a silly video game. Why is everything different? It doesn't even feel like the same series to me? I die quickly, I die often. It honestly feels like a Call of Duty game to me. The entire "feel" is just different as far as gameplay. I pulled a little enjoyment out of Strike but that was just about the only time I even felt enjoyment during my dozens of hours playing. The "feel" of the game, the "heart" of the game is just...so....off.

Finally I became so fed up I decided to throw Battlefront 1 back in to see if anyone was still playing. Wow. Just....wow. It was like returning home after a too-long vacation. It was sort of bittersweet realizing how disenchanted I am with BF2. Spawning with my partner, the Star Wars "feel" to the maps and guns, the pulled out view of my character so I could better see my surroundings, the fantastic progression system, the exchanges of gunfire, the radar that makes so much more sense, seeing number of deaths on the scoreboard, actual awards after the match, the pace of the games. I think I had a smile on my face for 3 hours of blissful gameplay. The teamwork was there, and everything just made sense in victory and defeat.

I am not knocking BF2, I am sure it is exactly what many wanted. It is not the game I was looking for and probably the most disappointing video game experience in my nearly 40 years of gaming.

Really no point to my post but I wanted to give a salute to what I feel was a fantastic game in BF1 and a plea to keep these servers active as long as you possibly can. I will keep tabs on patch updates and may try it out once in a great while but the soul of the game is just missing. I am heading back to BF1. It feels good to be back home.

  • You pretty much hit the nail on the head. I don’t think the servers for BF1 will die, there’s a lot of people who feel this way and there is a point behind your post, hopefully the devs see. I think they went too far and didn’t think a lot through, it’s confusing and frustrating. Battle points are more of a hassle than they’re worth, the end game point system is always different from battle points but no explaination why. Points to credits make no sense, 2 games I scored around 7k points and got 332 credits one game and 1100 the next, why so different? BF1 was perfect for me, I’ve never been a FPS game player but BF1was so much fun and chaotic. I never had any glitches that I’ve heard others talk about and really thought it was a well balanced game though sales weren’t that good. I honestly have to say for once they could of went call of duty style and succeeded, new guns, maps a few game modes and hero’s and done. In BF1 I would get frustrated constantly on dying and figuring ways to survive longer. In BF2 I’m just frustrated and annoyed being 1 shot through walls or by people with no clear line of sight, competing just to try and get a hero once before the game ends, trying to keep everyone together for BP boost. It’s just a frustrating game that’s not so much fun.
  • I truly, truly wish BF2 was just BF1 with new maps, characters, vehicles, weapons, etc. It really isn’t a loot crate thing with me. Not entirely. Simply playing BF2 just feels so unnecessarily different. Why did they change the engine to make it less fun?
  • Op, I’m with ya brother, bf15 is the best Star Wars multiplayer of all time imo, heck, for that matter it’s the best multiplayer I’ve played period. Shame they changed it the way they did, and to top that bf2 is getting bashed more than bf15 ever did. While bf15 is still doing fine in my experience, still seeing new players which is good, that said I don’t see bf2 making it as it is now, that’s to bad.

Completely understand where you are coming from. It is difficult to move on from a game where you have your habits and where you learnt to master maps; weapons and so on. But, believe me BF2 will grow on you. And regarding about the Star Wars feel that you think is lost. I think it is due to the inclusion of the prequel era. The design language is so different that it feels like a different universe. It is not bad on the contrary but it just does not fit with the Original trilogy and the new one. But, if you want to feel like at home and improve your BF2 skills. Start by playing Strike and Star Figther assault and just get out when a prequel era map shows up. It seems that they are working on era based playlist. So, that will help too. But true that Walker assault is missing. There was something grandiose about walkers advancing and the rebellion trying to stop them. So iconic !
  • I agree it does grow on you, but the problem more is battle points and credits. I fully believe a game should come with some work to put in for unlockables, but BF2 is ridiculous. The amount of time I get to play, BF3 will be out by the time I get everything unlocked. I can’t play 40hrs a week just to unlock a few hero’s, I don’t have that time. Same with battle points, we didn’t pay 60,80,100 to never get to be a hero cause we don’t play enough to get those points. That’s where the main issue comes in, it favorites full time players to have an advantage. Like I said I fully believe you should have to put In work but at 300 credits a game and 10-15k hero’s and 4K chests, I don’t have that kind of time. That’s where I think BF1 was more balanced, 10% score went to credits, being a hero was even by finding the token. I like BF2, I really do, I think it’s gorgeous, good maps etc, just the time investment it takes to unlock a damn chest is crazy.
  • I agree.

To me, they sucked the soul out of the game in order to replace it with the Casino sLoot Crates and focussed on making it frustrating enough you would shell out even more money.

. The smaller claustrophobic maps are gone and so are some of the fun modes, but I'm hoping some will come in to replace them.

The game looks Breath taking, but the balance that made the first game work so well is gone. No more rock paper scissors of weapons, now they are just levels of power. There is no direct counter balance like before.

Seriously, the game was broken by the loot crates. Just like Halo was. Just like every game will be. Because sLoot Machines are easy money and the house never looses.

    Just the players.

The game could be good. But Ea has said they will not change their core strategy. Which I assume is ripping everyone off by giving them mainly duplicates until they scream to buy a better chance at getting what they need.

    That's where the soul went.

No small maps, terrible radar, no weapon balancing (just levels of power with no counter), modes that quickly get boring and worst of all, in my view the reason for it all: a casino rather than earned progress.
  • Once you get used to Battlefront 2 then you’ll see it’s much better.
  • I strongly disagree. When I got battlefront 1 I literally stopped playing after 3 hours because it was such a lackluster experierience. Battlefront 2 offers so much more in terms of content and gameplay. Battlefront 2 is superior in almost every way, despite the micro transaction system. Battlefront 2 gave me the star wars feeling where battlefront 1 did not.

However, neither of the games live up to what the original battlefront games offered, which is exactly what I wanted, so that's the real disappointment for me.
  • Another thing I wanted to mention was customization, I think that was another fun thing in BF1 where there was a huge range of diversity. Now I can’t even give my assault trooper a impact grenade, I have to change classes for that.

I agree with you completely. I have the same views about SWBF1 and SWBF2. These days, I find myself playing more SWBF1 than the new one as I am having more joys from playing it...

EA and DICE should have taken SWBF1as the basis and add more stuff and fix things which needed fixing. Instead, they went for all-new platform for SWBF2 which is a wrong decision. Like the saying, “If it ain’t broken, don’t fix it!”

  • I agree with y'all so much. I'm not even one of those guys that die all the time; I'm often in the top5 players of the match... but even then, I don't feel enjoyment. The gameplay is just frustrating to the max.

I hope they didn't ignore the thousands of people playing SWBF2015 and only listened to the irrational complainers.

In my opinion they were right on track with SWBF2015. Most certainly gameplaywise. Contentwise is always debatable (even though I had absolutely no problem with the amount of content in SWBF2015).

I kind of keep hoping that they will change things for the (/ our) better, but since so many of the core mechanics are wrong, it leaves me worried.

Until then I will just keep enjoying SWBF2015 and its great community of players.

battlefront 1 has its own problems ("fixed" traits that are much more unbalanced than the 2 trait-versions they had before), star cards like bodyguard, adrenaline rush and bacta bomb kind of destroyed the whole "one-shot" mechanic the game is built around. This means you have to always run with one bacta-guard hand to be competitive once your opponents run this setup.

Besides that, i totally agree - The first one feels much more immersive, especially on the small modes. In my view BF2 is missing fast-paced small modes with trooper vs trooper, where BF1 really did shine. Reinforcements and heroes were never my favorite, Hero Hunt was a funny addition though.

Maybe EA will add some small modes with balanced objectives like cargo to BF2 in the future. Sadly, once possible new modes hit BF2, the player base will have progressed with all there star cards, so there will be no point of starting the game and trying my luck with loot crate gambling then.

The mode where BF2 is much superior to the first one in my view is Starfighter Assault. This mode really is fun now, and i never had fun playing it in the Battlefront2015 - good work on that.

Anyway - I'm glad, that i'm not alone at returning to BF2015 and Cargo - Hopefully many more will avoid picking bodyguard and bacta to keep up the fun

edit: Forgot to mention the DLC-playlists which still just suck. They should've included new maps into the old mode rotations and just add new playlists for the new modes.

    Turning Tides might kill bf2.

  • Bf2k17 is better in every way in my opinion bf2k15 was just lacking in alot of ways now I'm not saying bf2k17 isn't flawed because it is but I stand by and fully support the new battlefront.
  • There is no question in my mind: Battlefront 2015 is far better than the disastrous Battlefront 2.
  • I am slowly warming up to BF2 and I do enjoy some aspects of it. I am just so used to sequels having bigger, better and more of everything. It feels like they decided to start over instead of building on a great base game and as a result a lot of the little things disappeared. I will get used to the new feel of the game I am sure but it is kind of disappointing hoping the little things can slowly be added in when they were already there previously. The thrill of avenging a partner death, the joy of improving your stats, etc. It would make my day if the maps could be brought in as DLC because as a big time Blast player, the maps in BF1 are far superior for anyone other than corridor fans.

Going to give both games some time, just surprised how much I realized BF1 nailed really well and hard to take a step back. Hopefully BF2 can continue to grow into something I can appreciate as well.

    Well said, Thank you.
I bought a PS4 console solely based on Battlefront ( ours was preloaded bundle). This was our fist console purchase since the PS2 well over 10 years ago.
Would I go out and buy a new XBOX One X to play BF2?
    No absolutely not.
    That..... says it all.
  • Absolutely agree.
  • You know what I think makes a weirdly large difference?
In previous Battlefront, the laser bolts looked like they did in the Star Wars movies - big chunky red glowing lines. In BF2, they're weedy little yellow streaks. It stops it feeling like Star Wars. It makes it hard to see where they're coming from, which is why we all die a lot, even though the game mechanics are really almost unchanged from first BF. That and the useless radar.
  • I kind of agree really with all of the above except that the player movement and handling in BF2 is more fun and feels more fluid because of the multi directional roll mechanic.

I also prefer the longer time to kill in BF2.

Something about 2015 felt really Star Wars. It had essence and it took me there.

    Even the Sullust Maps.

  • GOOD GAME BUT UNPLAYABLY FURSTRATING. I agree. I play with my best friend and it feels like we are always separated. One of us dies and has to run ALLLLLLL the way back to the front, at with point there's a good chance the OTHER one has died. Why take out Partner spawn? I love the Squad, but... My BF and me are a two man squad. I'm fine with that. Most of the time, people on your squad just run off in three different directions anyway.

Oh yes, I loved being surrounded by Aimbot, wall hacks, infinite jump jet hackers and TL-50 spammers back then. Or the meta Bacta, Shield, Jump pack with Bodyguard. Ahh the good old days

  • Last time I played the lag and getting shot by ghosts through walls (on PS4) was worse than ever. Horrible.

I went from leaderboard in battlefield 1 to barely able to play in SWBF1. On the same day.

But I miss Sollust. That was a good WA map and a good TP map. And I loved, loved extraction until they broke it.

And jet packs were fun. But the lag and netcode in SWBF was the worse of any recent game.

  • Haven't looked back since November. Highly unlikely I'll return to that content lacking game.
  • Here is how I always put BF2

Best gameplay for this type of Shooter ever.

Worst progression system for any game ever.

They got the gameplay down, and working to fix the progression system.

Free DLC's for life. And this one is 100% better than bf2015. Watching a Bossk get a 350+ killstreak is soo..... fun I mean like, he's so awesome shoot anyone once and they die. and I get health back. I lay waste and nothing anyonce can do about it. That's great gameplay. pfft. Now on the flip side, heroes in BF2 feel weak because they can't run around like Lando and Bossk could in BF2015.

This game gameplay is 100% that of BF2015. At least its my opinion.

You are farced in the head!!! Comparing a 2 yr old game to a game not even being a month old, wow... s'pose you forgot how messed up that BF1(EA) was on release then eh? and how long before it actually was a good game!!

See you in your next complaint that BFX(EA) is no way near as good as BF2!!!
